What steps should I take to get compensation from my car accident?

I was in a left turn lane in a borrowed car that has liability insurance coverage only, when a lady driving a SUV crossed 2 lanes of traffic to get into the turn lane and she didn't see me and ploughed into the passenger side two doors and middle post. She gave police her insurance card and it appeared to be current, we find out from her insurance company that she hadn't paid her premium and she was out of her grace period when the accident happened. The insurance company did renew her policy after she paid the premium the day after the accident. But they won’t cover the claim for the day of accident. How do I get her to pay for damages to my friend’s car? What’s my next step?

The owner of the car you were driving will have to sue the other driver personally.
